Trip Overview

Mount Lhotse Expedition – 8516 m – with Himalayan Alpine Adventure Trek & Expedition.
Mount Lhotse lies about 3 km south of Mount Everest separated from it by the South Col. Lhotse actually means The South Face. The Lhotse massif consists of three peaks: Lhotse East of Middle, Lhotse, and Lhotse Shar. The South Face of Lhotse is the most technical face to climb and is also known as one of the largest mountain faces in the world. Khumbu Icefall is the section which has been unanimously declared as the most dangerous one during the climb. Both Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse share the same base camp. In fact, Lhotse is a part of the Everest massif, although it is considered to be an independent mountain.
The South Face of Lhotse was only successfully scaled in 1984. As the area is little developed, this massif also holds immense promise and offers fascinating opportunities. Lhotse can actually be climbed either from Everest Base Camp or nearby Chhukung. Without a doubt, the Lhotse Expedition has many challenges including harsh weather conditions, high altitude, and even sheer exhaustion. Himalayan Alpine Adventure does its best to ensure the safety of your Lhotse Expedition. Join us for this wonderful climbing experience.

The Climb.
The climbing itinerary depends on the climber’s personal mountaineering experience. The climbing day involves a steady climb for approx. 4 hours in the morning. There is then a climb of approx. 3 hours after taking a lunch rest. Himalayan Alpine Adventure ensures the ratio of climbers to guides is good, focusing on exacting safety measures so that each individual climber is able to progress at their own rate.
Trek to the Base Camp
The early days of our trek bring us to the Khumbu Valley. We will keep our trek moderately paced which also helps acclimatization during the climb. We pass through several Sherpa villages which also provide an opportunity to be introduced to the wonderful Himalayan culture.
Camp 1 (5800 m)
As for the Everest Expedition, the base camp for Lhotse is the same. We clip into the fixed lines to head through the Khumbu Icefall up to the plateau of the Western Cwm and Camp 1.
Camp 2 (6200m)
Our route traverses the flattish bottom of the Western Cwm to Camp 2 which is situated on a rocky moraine below the west face of Everest.
Camp 3 (7200 m)
Camp 3 is located on a flat section protected by the solid ice walls on the Lhotse face. We must negotiate the Lhotse face to reach Camp 3. Lhotse face is not very technical but not easy either.
Camp 4 (7850m)
Camp 4 is situated on the rock shelves on the upper Lhotse face. Camp 4 is the highest camp and can be an airy perch for the few days we reside there.
